On September 20th, employees from the fairlife HQ in Chicago stepped away from their desks for the afternoon to get into the weeds with Chicago FarmWorks, a 2018 fairlife Grant Winner. Chicago FarmWorks is a program of Heartland Alliance, one of the largest poverty-fighting non-profits in the country. In 2018 they received a fairlife Grant to support Harvest Commons, a housing development in the Chicago neighborhood of West Town that provides a place to live, skills training, and access to fresh food to previously homeless clients. The grant went towards funding the urban farm on premise, where residents are able to choose what to grow and learn about maintaining urban agriculture.
The fairlife team was eager to get to work, attacking weeds and rotating compost. We also helped plant carrots and lettuce while clearing walkways and plant beds to give all the plants room to grow. It was a satisfying and sweaty day, and we can’t wait to get back out there with our friends at Harvest Commons!
