Meet Our fairlife Grant Winners: Proviso Giving Garden
In January of 2018, we awarded $2500 grants to 5 deserving Chicagoland organizations tackling problems of food access, insecurity, and sustainability. We’re proud to share their stories and support the incredible work they are doing for their communities.
Proviso Giving Garden
The Proviso Giving Garden in the township of Proviso was built by Proviso Partners for Health in partnership with Loyola University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The 13.5 acre urban farm provides a food oasis in the underserved community, producing around 2,000 pounds of food a year. The majority of the food is donated to senior homes and soup kitchen, with a small amount sold to support the farm. Farm manager Christopher Epps also provides mentoring & lectures for youth about urban agriculture & food justice.
The fairlife Grant is being used to build mobile grow carts that can grow up to 5,000 sprouts for the farm to plant. They will also enhance Christopher’s education initiatives as he can bring the carts to his lectures to allow the kids to experience the steps of agriculture firsthand.
