Sweet, tart and bursting with important nutrients, grapefruit is a superfood that has many benefits for athletes. Just one half of a grapefruit provides 64 percent RDA of vitamin C, 28 percent of vitamin A, 5 percent of vitamin B-6, 166 milligrams potassium and 2 grams dietary fiber, all for just 52 calories.

The natural complex carbohydrates in grapefruit will fuel your training and assist in your recovery.

Research suggest that, thanks to the flavonoid naringenin, consuming ½ a grapefruit before meals helps to balance blood sugar levels and encourages the liver to burn, not store, excess fat. As part of a healthy diet along with adequate protein and exercise, grapefruit may help you achieve that lean, low-body fat look you’ve been working so hard for. Studies have also linked grapefruit consumption to reductions in cholesterol levels, inflammation and chronic diseases.

The great thing about grapefruit is that these juicy, jumbo-sized fruits are typically one of the more inexpensive picks in the produce section. If you see a sale, stock up because this citrus fruit will stay fresh in the crisper bin of your refrigerator for about four weeks.

Looking for new ways to enjoy grapefruit?

Consider blending segments into your post-workout smoothie or slice a grapefruit in half crosswise, top with honey and spices, and caramelize under the broiler for a few minutes.

So next time you are at the farmer’s market or the grocery store, don’t let this superfood pass you by and get a basket of grapefruits!
