about our internship program:

The fairlife Summer Internship Program is designed to welcome interns across our locations to gain meaningful experience and social and professional development opportunities. For 10 weeks, interns will work in one of our three locations: Chicago, IL, Coopersville, MI, or Goodyear, AZ. fairlife’s paid internship program also offers a summer full of social, professional, and community engagement events including exposure to our senior leadership and executives across the business in small group settings, insight into company initiatives, off-site field trips, and for those qualified and selected, an opportunity to pursue a full-time job opportunity.

The fairlife 2023 Summer Internship Program will take place from 6/5 through 8/11 at one of the fairlife locations: Chicago, IL, Coopersville, MI, or Goodyear, AZ.

job purpose: The Quality Assurance Lab Intern will be a part of the quality team within fairlife, LLC. This individual will actively work with the laboratory technicians and quality team to identify best practices and differences in lab procedures, methods, and workflow. They will focus on direct observations, time studies and standardization of processes/procedures to help make lab efficiency improvements.

skills/qualifications required:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree program, entering the fall semester as a sophomore, junior, or senior or are working towards a graduate degree
  • Preferred focus on Food Science, Packaging, Engineering, Biology, Nutrition, or related discipline
  • Preferred incoming Junior or Senior
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0, or higher
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and work in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and presentation skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Occasional travel to various sites in other states may be required

project overview and guidelines:

  • Laboratory performance, competency evaluation and benchmarking
  • Create a Map or Diagram of current lab processes
  • Conduct Time Studies for laboratory testing across technicians to identify standardization needs for improvement
  • Direct observation of test as well as instrument maintenance and function checks
  • Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results
  • Compare laboratory unit costs to enable budgeting for finished goods by case, per test
  • Identify best practices, differences and duplicates in existing lab procedures, processes, methods, and workflows across sites
  • Work to Standardize Lab Procedures and Methods across sites
  • Identify opportunities to increase laboratory efficiencies  
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

  • Learning and understanding GMP in a dairy manufacturing environment
  • Effective written communication skills through development of standard operating procedures

working conditions and physical requirements:

  • Sitting/standing/walking during completion of job responsibilities
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as necessary

food safety requirements:

  • Notify supervision of any repairs or adjustments that are required that may affect product quality or food safety.
  • Understand, observe, and comply with the handling and usage of the color-coded container policy while in the Production Areas.
  • Perform all duties necessary to meet Company, Customer and/or Government requirements/standards as prioritized by the Company.
  • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of Food Safety and Quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
  • In the event of absence, another employee with the same skill level will assume the duties and responsibilities as required.
