job purpose: The Packaging Automation Project Engineer will work with the project team on electrical distribution systems, controls upgrades, start-up & commissioning of equipment, automation documentation, troubleshooting controls related issues and data collection. The Packaging Automation Project Engineer serves as an expert resource to operations and maintenance on new equipment and acts as a project liaison to the operations and engineering teams.

responsibilities:

  • This position requires an individual with strong technical skills relating to packaging control systems. The individual will support the plant throughout the life cycle of project work.
  • Work as part of an integrated design team to meet project requirements and deliverables
  • Function as an SME for packaging systems automation components and infrastructure.
  • Review Specifications, P&IDs, layouts, electrical schematics, HMI screens, PLC programs, SCADA, etc.
  • Conduct reviews of application design with site and project teams to ensure that the automation requirements have been adhered to.
  • Manage system integrators and internal fairlife team members to deliver all aspects of Automation.
  • Assists Project Manager with technical issues and determine changes which may/can have commercial/scheduling impact.
  • Provides verbal and written reports to communicate project status as required and contribute to project review meetings.
  • Review project hardware/software for compliance with applicable codes/standards and assure personnel/machinery safety practices are fully implemented. Ensure the quality, conformity and safety of the automated equipment, before and after they are delivered and installed.
  • Guide engineering work by contractors or suppliers and ensure commissioned performance of installations achieve a pre-determined set of supplier acceptance and production hand-off criteria for new equipment.
  • Lead and participate in the commissioning and system acceptance process
  • Visits internal/external panel manufacturing facilities to assess progress, provide technical assistance and for final inspection and sign off.
  • Develop FAT protocols. Lead, manage and document FATs.
  • Visits internal/external automation solution providers to assess progress, provide technical assistance and conduct FATs.
  • Support validation activities including review and execution of automation Factory Acceptance Test and Site Acceptance Test (FAT/SAT) protocols.

skills/qualifications required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or a related science field.
  • 5+ years experience in filling and packaging line control system applications (fillers, sleevers, case packers, palletizers, etc.) throughout the project lifecycle from initial design concepts through to installation and end user support.
  • Experience working with filling and packaging systems in a food and beverage or dairy environment.
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation Products hardware and software product suites (ControlLogix, Logix 5000, FT View, FT Historian and FT VantagePoint).
  • Experience with other automation platforms such as Siemens, B&R, GE, Aveva/Wonderware, etc.
  • Experience in automation system project delivery and major capital projects including schedule and cost management.
  • Strong Power Distribution experience

food safety requirements:

  • Notify supervision of any repairs or adjustments that are required that may affect product quality or food safety.
  • Understand, observe, and comply with the handling and usage of the color-coded container policy while in the Production Areas.
  • Perform all duties necessary to meet Company, Customer and/or Government requirements/standards as prioritized by the Company.
  • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of Food Safety and Quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
  • In the event of absence, another employee with the same skill level will assume the duties and responsibilities as required.
