job purpose:

The Process Engineer – LA is responsible for the data analysis, systems management, projects, and key initiatives related to the plant-wide dairy losses and wastewater generation across all departments. The Process Engineer LA leads and develops the programs and initiatives to reduce waste throughout the site including dairy losses, product and material waste, water usage, utility usage. They are responsible for the oversight of the wastewater program working closely with the contract operations team on-site, 3rd party resources, and wastewater treatment plant leadership on all relevant data, testing, and initiatives as needed to maintain compliance to permitted effluent levels.  The Process Engineer works closely with the engineering team, and production team to drive continuous improvement in utility usage and sustainability programs, water usage, and high solids waste streams to the drain.  This is a key role in identifying and leading ways to improve the overall environmental impact of the plant by reducing waste and carbon emissions throughout.

 

responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing and managing losses reports and wastewater reporting
  • Identifies and drives initiatives to reduce waste, water usage, and utility savings
  • Design and implement innovative ways to track and trend product loss data (bottle weights, scrap, component testing, process optimization)
  • Reviews and reports out daily wastewater data, and product losses
  • Ability to lead and drive key capital projects including utility upgrades, water system improvements, and wastewater treatment solutions.
  • Manages key relationships with city wastewater treatment officials, contractors, utility suppliers, and relevant stakeholders
  • Works with ES&H Manager for submission of required reports for the site
  • Manages the junior level Losses and Wastewater Engineer
  • Builds reports and tools to track and monitor product loss data throughout the plant
  • Verify that all CIPS, flushes, processing systems, fillers, etc. are limiting high solids streams to the drain. Processes are monitored and optimized.
  • Working closely with production and continuous improvement to identify and facilitate water and product savings activities across the facility.
  • Focus on reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency at every level.

skills/qualifications required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Chemical, Biosystems, Environmental Engineering, or similar discipline preferred) with proven knowledge of process flow and fluid mass balance
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of food industry or environmental related experience required
  • Proven experience working in a manufacturing setting, with a passion for reducing waste and improving sustainability
  • Data driven individual with the ability to analyze and contextualize relevant data
  • Continuous Improvement mindset including root cause analysis, strategic planning
  • Ability to manage projects effectively with cross functional teams and multiple stakeholders
  • Understanding of basic wastewater operations, functionality, and chemistry
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated success working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

food safety requirements:

  • Responsible for maintaining critical control points, aseptic requirements, and regulatory standards at all times.
  • Responsible for implementing corrective actions and necessary changes specific to water systems, contamination risk or non-conformances
  • Accountable for 3rd party Food Safety and GMP audits/results as well as internal Quality and Food Safety programs.
  • Perform all duties necessary to meet Company, Customer and/or Government requirements/standards as prioritized by the Company.
  • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system.
